Because our pieces are crafted with delicate gold-plated finishes and, in some cases, one-of-a-kind vintage charms, they require a little extra care to keep them looking beautiful over time. Gold plating is a delicate finish that naturally wears with regular use, and the longevity of your piece will depend on how it is worn, stored, and cared for.

Caring for Your Gold-Plated Jewelry

Gold-plated jewelry has a layer of gold applied over another metal. Unlike solid gold, the plating is not permanent and will naturally wear over time with friction, moisture, oils, and exposure to chemicals.

To help preserve the finish of your jewelry:

  • Keep it dry. Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, bathing, or exercising.

  • Avoid perfumes and products. Apply perfume, hairspray, lotions, oils, and other beauty products before putting on your jewelry and allow them to fully dry.

  • Keep it away from chemicals. Household cleaners, chlorine, salt water, and other chemicals can accelerate wear and discoloration.

  • Remove jewelry while sleeping. Friction against bedding can contribute to wear on delicate finishes and chains.

  • Put it on last and take it off first. This simple habit helps minimize exposure to beauty products and daily wear.

  • Store it properly. Keep each piece in a dry place, ideally in its Elisa Charms pouch or jewelry box, and avoid storing pieces tangled together.

  • Handle with care. Avoid pulling, bending, or putting unnecessary pressure on delicate chains and charms.

A Note on Natural Wear

Gold plating is a finish, not a lifetime guarantee. Over time, the plating may become thinner or show changes in color, particularly on areas that experience frequent friction. This is a natural characteristic of plated jewelry and is not considered a manufacturing defect.

How quickly this occurs varies from person to person and depends heavily on wear and care. Some pieces may maintain their finish for a long time with occasional wear and careful handling, while pieces worn daily may naturally show signs of wear sooner.

Caring for Vintage Charms

Some of our most special pieces feature vintage charms that have already lived a beautiful life long before becoming part of yours.

Many of our vintage charms are several decades old, with some dating back 50, 75, or even close to 100 years. Their age, history, and character are part of what makes them so special—and also means they should be treated with the utmost care.

Vintage charms may naturally have signs of age such as subtle scratches, patina, variations in color, worn plating, or other imperfections. These are not flaws; they are part of the charm's history and contribute to its one-of-a-kind character.

Because these pieces are decades old, they may also be more delicate than newly manufactured charms. Please handle vintage pieces gently and avoid bending, pulling, dropping, or exposing them to water and chemicals.

We recommend:

  • Storing vintage pieces in their pouch or jewelry box when not being worn.

  • Avoiding water, perfume, lotions, and chemicals.

  • Removing vintage jewelry before sleeping, showering, swimming, or exercising.

  • Handling charms gently when putting on or removing your jewelry.

  • Being especially mindful of delicate vintage components, which may have naturally weakened over many decades.
